PAUL TAZEWELL FOR WICKED
This is the second win and nomination for Paul Tazewell. He previously won for costume designing West Side Story (2021).
Adapting Wicked for the cinema screens required a lot of pressure and expectations for all involved yet for me no department but the costume department had more pressure to match the iconicness of the stage show as well as the history of Oz films too. Paul Tazewell had already done wonderful work three years ago on West Side Story another impressive stage to screen adaptation yet with Wicked he managed to even improve upon the spectacle and wonder possible.
He successfully for me created some iconic looks including but not limited to Glinda's entire pink wardrobe both in present and flashback scenes, the interesting structure of Elphaba's black witches hat and the weather inspired gowns worn by Michelle Yeoh's Madame Morrible. Even if some have their issues with the photography of the film I do not see how you could have issues with the scale and great execution of the films costume work.
