AND THE WINNER:

DAHOMEY (DIRECTED BY MATI DIOP)

This is the first win and nomination for Mati Diop.

2024 yet another impressive year for documentary film making featured many worthy titles I might've nominated in this top five but in the end these five titles are just the ones both story and structure wise I will take from this year when I think of documentary film making.

Mati Diop made such an impression on me five years ago with her feature film directorial debut Atlantics and I had been waiting desperately to witness what she would do next and since hearing of her Berlin winning documentary earlier this year I greatly anticipated it. When finally seeing the film I was majorly impressed by Diop's narrative style returning through the lens of a documentary too.

The film isn't your traditional or expected film without talking heads, interview scenes or just what you'd regularly expect from a documentary. Diop challenges your expectations and does it so impressively with great photography, use of narration to add mystery to the subjects at the centre and just making something so staggering I expect many to discuss the films greatness for decades to come.
