This is the first win and nomination for Clarence "Divine Eye" Maclin. He wins for his performance as himself in Sing Sing.
Ever since seeing Sing Sing I knew it was gonna be pretty difficult for any supporting actor performance to beat Clarence Maclin. This was then confirmed when I revisited the film a few weeks later yet again being impressed by his magnificent heartfelt performance.
In the prison and life drama Maclin plays a version of himself and from the minute he is introduced you the audience become so involved in his simple journey whether that be him discovering his love of theatre as well as reaching his later release from prison by the films end. Maclin doesn't get many overblown dramatic acting moments instead his performance is mostly composed of vibing through the films love for performing that he executes so beautifully.
Maclin being overlooked by the end of awards season this year is gonna upset for me for such a long time as his performance is so expertly delivered and all I can hope is that he will have many more incredible performances like his great turn in Sing Sing.
