TWIN PEAKS (“PART 11”)

This is the first win and nomination for Ronald Eng, Dean Hurley, David A. Cohen, Kerry Dean Williams, Luke Gibleon & Willard Overstreet. This is also the first win and third nomination for Douglas Axtell who was previously nominated sound for Alias (2004-2005). This is also David Lynch’s second win and nomination. He also won for his performance on Louie (2013).

Yet another win for the team behind Twin Peaks. I could’ve easily singled out the entire series of Twin Peaks for a wonderful journey through sound design. The sound really elevated the entire narrative being used to trick and treat you throughout the run of episodes. I especially loved moments of weirdness that occurred throughout the series and how the sound team leveled the sound effects to invest the audience in the unusualness of the multiple weird moments.

AND THE WINNER IS:

STERLING K. BROWN AS PHILIP DAVIDSON FOR (“THE BOX”) IN “BROOKLYN NINE-NINE”

This is the first and second nomination for Sterling K. Brown. He was previously nominated for The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (2016).

Since Sterling broke out as Darden two years ago he has seemingly become an overnight sensation and go to actor for greatness on television. While I personally have not watched an episode of This is Us I appreciate his work on the show as well as the rare leading actor of colour. His guest turn on Brooklyn Nine-Nine was a surprise this tv season where he able to easily enter this universe fit in and in some ways blow the regular cast away. He played a role which wasn’t about obvious humour and more about his special delivery making each punchline land. He showed yet again why he has become such a favourite to many people out there. This is a true guest turn that doesn’t promise a return but is still something I’ll take from this year’s season.

This is the first win and nomination for Peter Deming.

The eighth part of Twin Peaks this season has been widely agreed to be the best hour of the new season. It was wonderfully weird with visual moments I’ll never forget. Whether it’s the possible creation of Laura Palmer or weirdly beautiful ending these are images captured by Deming that have stuck with over a year after the episode aired. This marks the third win for Twin Peaks this year I wonder will it pick up any more trophies from me.

ANGELO BADALAMENTI FOR (“PART 1”), TWIN PEAKS

This is the first win and nomination for Angelo Badalamenti.

Twin Peaks win it’s second award with this prize for music composition. The music featured throughout this third season was intoxicating and really pushed my focus towards the show. Especially during moments when I was not sure what narratively was happening. Badalamenti’s work really enhanced everything about the show from an emotional to a production level. The first part especially introduced as well as revisited old themes from the series twenty plus years ago. The new music fit in well to the already established tracks and increased the familiarity I had with the initial series.

PRODUCTION DESIGN BY DEBORAH RILEY; SET DESIGN BY ROB CAMERON FOR (“DRAGONSTONE”), GAME OF THRONES

This is the first win and fourth nomination for both Deborah Riley & Rob Cameron. Both have been previously nominated for set designing Game of Thrones (2014-2016).

The revisit to Dragonstone alone wins the series this award for production design. We’d not seen the location in a couple of seasons and the sequence dedicated to Daenerys revisiting her once home is wonderful and makes you appreciate truly great set/production design. Deborah and Rob have been hired to do production designing for the series for the last couple of seasons and I’m finally rewarding them. Other locations featured in the episode are wonderfully designed but it’s especially this newish location that shows the greatness of the show’s production values.

This is the first win and second nomination for Donna Zakowska. She was previously nominated for costuming Empire Falls (2005).

The amazon series Mrs. Maisel was a success for most the minute the pilot was released during one of amazon’s pilot seasons. Then when the eventual first season aired the promise was fulfilled and we got a new great comedy series. The show being a period piece already meant that we would be getting some great costumes. It was some great 1950’s costumes with the women in bright colours and men in well fit suits. This particular standout episode was the one that featured Jane Lynch’s wonderful guest turn. All the hats and coats are wonderful to look out especially when worn by Midge travelling through this universe.

This is the first win and nomination for Duwayne Dunham.

Twin Peaks unsurprisingly had a wonderful return to our tv screens this past tv season. Dunham’s editing throughout the entire 18 episodes was wonderful because he had to craft a series created by David Lynch that had to appeal to a large crowd who might’ve not been used to Lynch’s later career style of storytelling. I’m awarding him for the entire series as he crafted in my opinion a fully satisfying series of trills and frills.
