SUCCESSION

This is the first win and third nomination for Succession in this category. For its final season Succession has received twelve nominations winning five of them. The show won for Drama Series, Drama Ensemble, Leading Drama Actress (Snook), Supporting Drama Actor (Macfadyen) & Drama Writing. The show was also nominated for Leading Drama Actor (Culkin), Leading Drama Actor (Strong), Supporting Drama Actor (Ruck), Guest Drama Actress (Abbass), Drama Directing (x2) & Editing.

Choosing the final season of Succession as the great drama series of this past television season is no surprise as I'm sure many will get behind that thought. What made me want to choose the series most of all is that I've never awarded it the win for overall Drama Series for any of the previous three seasons. This final season from the very beginning managed to surprise and shock me an audience member with each new weekly episode. If anything Succession proved that weekly release is still a sustainable way to release television as it keeps the conversation about a show going for a lot longer. I am so grateful to finally award the series a top drama trophy for it's final year airing on television.

ABBOTT ELEMENTARY

This is the second win and nomination for Abbott Elementary in this category. For its second season Abbott Elementary has received thirteen nominations winning seven of them. The show won for Comedy Series, Comedy Ensemble, Leading Comedy Actress (Brunson), Supporting Comedy Actor (Williams), Supporting Comedy Actress (Ralph), Guest Comedy Actor (Odom Jr.) & Guest Comedy Actress (Henson). The show was also nominated for Supporting Comedy Actor (Perfetti), Supporting Comedy Actress (James), Guest Comedy Actor (Jones), Guest Comedy Actress (Edebri), Comedy Directing & Comedy Writing.

When it comes to television from this past year the show that was the greatest event of the past year was Abbott Elementary. I had adored the first season awarding it comedy series last year and yet I found this second year and even greater season in comedy. Everyone on the show was more secure in their characters, the writing was even stronger and the plot lines that had began in the first season were built even greater in the second year and truly it was necessary tv watching every week. I just know the show is gonna continue to grow in quality and audience size as the years progress and I for one am very happy for when this is going to happen.

Truly it was spectacular to experience every character this season as played by the strong ensemble.

OUTSTANDING MINISERIES OR MOVIE

Beef
Dead Ringers
The English
Fire Island
Swarm
This is Going to Hurt

AND THE WINNER IS:

BEEF

With this win Beef wins its third prize from seven nominations. The series also won Leading Actor (Yeun) & Writing. It was also nominated for Leading Actress (Wong), Supporting Actor (Mazino), Supporting Actress (Park) & Directing

With this being the final award for miniseries and tv movies this Beef wins in a very tight race with a genre that really spread the wealth when it came to winners. Beef instantly became an incredible show when I originally binged it back in the early part of this year. The show regardless of whatever category it was going to be submitted in was gonna be my choice. The show was just so wild and enjoyable that I had no choice but to award it.

Paddy Considine as King Viserys I Targaryen for (“The Lord of the Tides”) in “HOUSE OF THE DRAGON”
Kieran Culkin as Roman Roy for (“Kill List”) in “SUCCESSION”

Jeremy Strong as Kendall Roy for (“Honeymoon States”) in “SUCCESSION”

AND THE WINNER IS:

ANTHONY STARR AS JOHN / HOMELANDER FOR ("THE INSTANT WHITE-HOT WILD") IN "THE BOYS

This is the first win and nomination for Anthony Starr. He wins for his performance as John / Homelander on The Boys.

I'll be the first to admit I'm late to The Boys having only binged all three season this past season. Finishing the series there is no excuse why I've not viewed the show yet. I was quite impressed with the series overall and in focusing on the third season this season i must say I was majorly impressed by the work of Anthony Starr. Maybe his work in the first two seasons is also affecting my decision of him as my winner but even with my memories of the third season I must praise his impressive work. The role of Homelander isn't easy to play and Starr plays it extremely well. In the seasons finale all the drama comes to a head and Starr has to manoeuvre so many extreme emotions and I was blown away by everything he did. Starr is so impressive on the show and I look forward to what comes from him in future seasons.

OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A DRAMA SERIES

Sharon Horgan for (“Saving Grace”), Bad Sisters
Daniel "Koa" Beaty for (“The End of STR Laurie”), The Good Fight
Craig Mazin for (“Long Long Time”), The Last of Us
Jesse Armstrong for (“Connor's Wedding”), Succession
Mike White for (“Arrivederci”), The White Lotus: Sicily

AND THE WINNER IS:

JESSE ARMSTRONG FOR ("CONNOR'S WEDDING"), SUCCESSION

This is the second consecutive win and nomination for Jesse Armstrong.

As soon as this third episode of the final Succession season ended I knew that the episode would be a strong contender for the best writing of this past season. This episode came out of nowhere for many fans of the show feeling very similar to an episode like "The Body" from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. What makes the episode so impactful is how real the entire episode feels and that is what makes the shocking death so heartbreaking is how it upends the entirety of the series and you do not know where the show is gonna go next. Armstrong really wrote an incredible episode like many he wrote for the show.
