OUTSTANDING ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

Big Hero 6 (Directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams)

How to Train Your Dragon 2 (Directed by Dean DeBlois)

The Lego Movie (Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller)

Song of the Sea (Directed by Tomm Moore)

The Tale of Princess Kaguya (Directed by Isao Takahata)

AND THE WINNER IS:

THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA (DIRECTED BY ISAO TAKAHATA)

This is the first win and nomination for Isao Takahata.

From Studio Ghibli The Tale of Princess Kaguya is my winning choice for the year’s best animated feature film. It should be always be said that while we live in an age of 3D animation that whenever a 2D animated film is as great as this one is it deserves to be said how much more impacting 2D animation will always be. The story is quite fascinating of how riches never always makes those who achieve it happy and with the title Princess Kaguya experiencing this hr story is deeply satisfying and brilliant to watch.

OUTSTANDING ENSEMBLE

Birdman (Lindsay Duncan, Zach Galifinakis, Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Merritt Wever)

Gone Girl (Ben Affleck, Lisa Banes, David Clennon, Carrie Coon, Kim Dickens, Patrick Fugit, Neil Patrick Harris, Boyd Holbrook, Lola Kirke, Scoot McNairy, Kathleen Rose Perkins, Tyler Perry, Rosamund Pike, Missi Pyle, Emily Ratajkowski, Sela Ward, Casey Wilson)

The Grand Budapest Hotel (F. Murray Abraham, Mathieu Amalric, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Ralph Fiennes, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel, Jude Law, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Tony Revolori, Saoirse Ronan, Jason Schwartzman, Léa Seydoux, Tilda Swinton, Tom Wilkinson, Owen Wilson)

*Into the Woods (Christine Baranski, Tammy Blanchard, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Lila Crawford, Johnny Depp, Daniel Huttlestone, Anna Kendrick, Billy Magnussen, MacKenzie Mauzy, Chris Pine, Lucy Punch, Meryl Streep, Tracey Ullman)

Selma (Common, Colman Domingo, Omar Dorsey, Carmen Ejogo, Cuba Gooding Jr., Andre Holland, Niecy Nash, Alessandro Nivola, David Oyelowo, Wendell Pierce, Giovanni Ribisi, Tim Roth, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Keith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Lorraine Toussaint, Tom Wilkinson, Oprah Winfrey, Ledisi Young)

AND THE WINNER IS:

INTO THE WOODS (CHRISTINE BARANSKI, TAMMY BLANCHARD, EMILY BLUNT, JAMES CORDEN, LILA CRAWFORD, JOHNNY DEPP, DANIEL HUTTLESTONE, ANNA KENDRICK, BILLY MAGNUSSEN, MACKENZIE MAUZY, CHRIS PINE, LUCY PUNCH, MERYL STREEP, TRACEY ULLMAN)

The ensemble element of Into the Woods is strong because of the greatly written characters in the film by James Lapine. From The Witch to The Baker’s Wife to Cinderella and every other character in between it is such a great example of how a film can be an ensemble effort with no clear leads and while some of the story strands might go off into a bad place non of this is the problem of the ensemble which is the year’s most impressive film ensemble.

OUTSTANDING MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING

Frances Hannon & Mark Coulier for The Grand Budapest Hotel

Elizabeth Yianni-Georgiou & David White for Guardians of the Galaxy

Peter King & J. Roy Helland for Into the Woods

Rick Baker, Toni G & Arjen Tuiten for Maleficent

Jeremy Woodhead for Snowpiercer

AND THE WINNER IS:

FRANCES HANNON & MARK COULIER FOR THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

This is the first win and nomination for Frances Hannon. This is third win and fourth nomination for Mark Coulier having previously been nominated for The Fifth Element (1997) & The Iron Lady (2011). His other nomination was for Rush (2013).

A visually striking film from minute one has some beautifully created makeup on top of some other beautiful production elements. The standout look shown above is the creation of character Madame D. who while featured briefly at the beginning of the film is striking when on screen shows the impressive work done by the makeup artists working on the film. Other makeup looks throughout the film include Gustave H., J.G. Jopling and Ludwig.

OUTSTANDING COSTUME DESIGN

Milena Canonero for The Grand Budapest Hotel

Mark Bridges for Inherent Vice

Patricia Norris for The Immigrant

Kasia Walicka-Maimone for A Most Violent Year

Sharen Davis for Selma

AND THE WINNER IS:

PATRICIA NORRIS FOR THE IMMIGRANT

This is the second consecutive win and nomination for Patricia Norris. She previously won for 12 Years a Slave (2013).

In the end my winning pick was Patricia Norris’ work on The Immigrant which was a great callback to the 1920’s look of the immigrants coming to america. Norris in her great costuming shows both the great suiting of the men of the time and also the depressing look of women who would perform for the men in the small nightclubs of New York City. Norris is legendary in the costume design industry and her work again is quite exciting to see. A standout piece by Patricia Norris is the above photo of Ewa and Bruno with her particular attention for detail being shown in this photo period specific costuming very much present.

OUTSTANDING MALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Josh Brolin as Det. Christian F. “Bigfoot” Bjornsen in “INHERENT VICE”

Michael Fassbender as Frank in “FRANK”

Ethan Hawke as Mason Evans Sr. in “BOYHOOD”

Ben Mendelsohn as Neville Love as in “STARRED UP”

Edward Norton as Mike Shiner in “BIRDMAN”

AND THE WINNER IS:

EDWARD NORTON AS MIKE SHINER IN “BIRDMAN”

This is the first win and second nomination for Edward Norton. He was previously nominated alongside the ensemble of Moonrise Kingdom (2012).

Edward Norton works with director Alejandro G. Inarritu on Birdman. Norton for years over a decade now has been either starring failed oscar films, failed blockbuster films or small critical films and it has been upsetting seeing an actor like Norton who showed such promise towards the end of the 90’s be so overlooked. As Mike Shiner in Birdman finally Norton is able give his heart and perform so well. Although he plays an unlikeable actor (maybe similar to Norton in real life) in scenes opposite Emma Stone we are able to see the character of Mike actually show some depth and throughout the entire film Norton is just brillIant making in exciting to see him finally be given the chance to show his greatness. This is Edward Norton’s first win and nomination.
