OUTSTANDING MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING

Joel Harlow & Ken Diaz for Black Panther
Nadia Stacey for The Favourite
Jenny Shircore, Marc Pilcher & Jessica Brooks for Mary Queen of Scots
Mark Coulier & Jeremy Woodhead for Stan & Ollie
Mark Coulier, Lydia de Martin & Andrea Eusebi for Suspiria

AND THE WINNER IS:

MARK COULIER, LYDIA DE MARTIN & ANDREA EUSEBI FOR SUSPIRIA

This is the first win and nomination for both Lydia de Martin & Andrea Eusebi. This is the third win and fifth/sixth nomination for Mark Coulier. He previously won for The Fifth Element (1997), The Iron Lady (2011) & The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014). He was also nominated for Rush (2013).

This year’s remake of Suspiria was wild in so many ways. It was not the same movie in many ways as the original 1977 version but there was so much greatness that I really enjoyed the newer version. Tilda Swinton in her third collaboration with Luca Guadagnino has now fully invested herself into his cinematic worlds. In this particular film she plays three characters and due to the greatness of it’s makeup and hairstyling she can believably play them in the same scene. The character designs are scary and stunning. They are very unique looking which I could really appreciate. One of Tilda's character in the finale of the film is haunting in it's look as well as it's breathing movements. There is also some great hairstyling in the film, especially Susie and Madame Blanc's wonderful long humane wigs. Truly great work and no wonder it is with Coulier's involvement.

OUTSTANDING MALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Raúl Castillo as Paps in “WE THE ANIMALS”
Hugh Grant as Phoenix Buchanan in “PADDINGTON 2”
Brian Tyree Henry as Daniel Carty in “IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK”
Russell Hornsby as Maverick ‘Mav’ Carter in “THE HATE YOU GIVE”
Steven Yeun as Ben in “BURNING”
AND THE WINNER IS:

HUGH GRANT AS PHOENIX BUCHANAN IN “PADDINGTON 2”

This is the first win and nomination for Hugh Grant. He wins for his performance as Phoenix Buchanan in Paddington 2.

I saw this film all the way back in December 2017 and even then I knew that it be hard to beat this performance. Grant as the loveable villan Phoenix is a delightful encapsulation of Grant as an actor as well as the struggle in is to be British theatre actor. Seeing Grant clearly having fun in this role as he bounces through the entirety of the film made for one of the most pleasurable film experiences of last year. Even just thinking about the finale musical number and how he just exudes confidence and charm makes for a wonderful performance. Now that it seems Grant has partially returned to great work I hope he continues to deliver like he did as Phoenix.

23rd "An Irish Person" FILM Awards ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

To everyone new and told welcome to my blog. For the next couple of weeks, I will be posting what I consider to be the best of the cinema in 2018. I will present 24 separate categories as a sort of the lead up to the Academy Awards on the 24th of February. I want to make a disclaimer before I start announcing nominees and winners starting on the 30th. I have seen a total of 181 films released in 2018 in the United States. That may seem like a large number which it is but sadly there are were plenty of films I haven't seen yet whether it's that I missed it during its release or the film hasn't come anywhere near me to see it. This year some of those films included Ben is Back, Bisbee '17, Capernaum, Claire's Camera, Hal, Hale County This Morning This Evening, Monrovia Indiana, Vox Lux & a few others that weren't as acclaimed during the year. I'm sure I will see these films at some stage but to keep in time with the Academy Awards I have to start announcing my favourite in film now and I just haven't managed to see these yet.
