26th "An Irish Person" FILM Awards RECAP!!

While 2020 proved to be a weird year due to theatres not being opened thankfully half way through 2021 that changed and many including myself got to go see films in screening rooms together. This year I managed to recognise 47 films with at least one nomination. The fact that I managed to make a list this large with only 10 months of eligible releases shows how varied the great films truly were this year. Only four films (Flee, Passing, The Power of the Dog, West Side Story) received above 5 nominations for me and given how the academy which are awarding their prizes today also managed to spread the wealth when it came to nominating films goes to show how strong cinema continues to be. My top 10 goes to show how varied the really great films were this year.

1. Flee

2. The Power of the Dog

3. Passing

4. Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)

5. Quo Vadis, Aida?

6. Shiva Baby

8. The Velvet Underground

OUTSTANDING PICTURE

AND THE WINNER:

FLEE (PRODUCED BY MONICA HELLSTRÖM & SIGNE BYRGE SØRENSEN)

These are the first wins and nominations for Monica Hellström & Signe Byrge Sørensen. With this prize Flee wins two awards from its five nominations. The film won for picture & international film. It was also nominated for director, animated film & documentary.

Flee truly is a film that I believe will standout amongst many great films in 2021 as the years best. The film is so singular and so unlike anything I've really seen before that even with stiff competition I had to vote it as my favourite of the year. The film is so just well crafted that when I watched the film on December 7th I sort've knew it would be my pick for the best of the year.

OUTSTANDING MALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

AND THE WINNER:

VINCENT LINDON AS VINCENT IN "TITANE"

This is the first win and nomination for Vincent Lindon. He wins for his performance as Vincent in Titane.

Vincent Lindon when he shows up in Titane easily takes your attention from any other performer in the film. I've been a fan of Lindon in previous films but with Titane he rises to another level. The film is in love with the image of Lindon and he is a wonder to behold in the film. I feel like when people watch the film they will understand why he is so great and why he has to be my leading actor winner of the year.

OUTSTANDING FEMALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

AND THE WINNER:

TESSA THOMPSON AS IRENE "REENIE" REDFIELD IN "PASSING"

This is the first win and second nomination for Tessa Thompson. She was previously nominated as part of the ensemble of Selma (2014).

During the decade of the 2010's Tessa Thompson has had such a varied career and while I've enjoyed her screen presence it wasn't until seeing Passing this past year where it all came together and I considered her to be giving a best of the year performance. It's clear that many have reacted so well to Negga based on her multiple awards mentions but for me you cannot have Passing be as great as it is without Thompson being just as captivating as Negga.

Tessa sort've has a more difficult task playing Irene because most of what makes the character the way she is based off of what she doesn't say. I found her endlessly watchable throughout and while most of performance was built off her facial reactions I thought she was captivating in those silences. I hope that Thompson proving herself in such a difficult role leads to more roles like this for Thompson.

OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL SONG

AND THE WINNER:

"BE ALIVE", KING RICHARD (MUSIC AND LYRICS BY DIXSON & BEYONCÉ KNOWLES-CARTER)

These are the first wins for Dixson & Beyoncé. Knowles-Carter was previously nominated alongside the ensemble of Dreamgirls (2006).

Admitedly the original song contenders from the year 2021 wasn't as strong as it has been quite recently but still I managed to award "Be Alive" a very worthy song my top prize. The song's place in the film comes in an ending montage which explains all that the Williams sisters went onto achieve in their later lifes which we all knew was impressive. The song showcases Beyoncê's great skills as a singing performer but also as a songwriter evident by her major involvement in the song. If this song ends up winning Knowles-Carter a major prize at the end of this week then I certainly will be nothing but happy.

OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL SCORE

AND THE WINNER:

JONNY GREENWOOD FOR THE POWER OF THE DOG

This is the second win and sixth/seventh nomination for Jonny Greenwood. He previously won for There Will Be Blood (2007). He was also nominated for The Master (2012), Inherent Vice (2014), Phantom Thread (2017), You Were Never Really Here (2018) & Spencer (2021).

It's impressive how many projects Greenwood was involved with this year and what is most impressive is how each outting featured great work from him. I knew he would be my winner it was just deciding between his nominated works. What made me lean towards Power of the Dog was how seamless the score fell into the rest of the film. It was noticeable for it's instrumentation but when I think of scenes of the film the score helps to give emotion to the scenes and wasn't standing out in a way that distracted. Again another great score from Greenwood who just proves again and again why he is one of the best working out there.

OUTSTANDING FILM EDITING

AND THE WINNER:

PETER SCIBERRAS FOR THE POWER OF THE DOG

This is the first win and nomination for Peter Sciberras.

Similar to the cinematography what made the editing the most impressive about Power of the Dog was how faultless it was and how invisible it was also. The film came with it's chaptered structure and because of Sciberras work the flow was strong and I never felt out of place when the title cards came up.

OUTSTANDING CINEMATOGRAPHY

AND THE WINNER:

ARI WEGNER FOR THE POWER OF THE DOG

This is the first win and nomination for Ari Wegner. She was double nominated for cinematography this year.

Did you see the dog or did you not? Part of what makes the photography of Power of the Dog so great is how not loud it is the entire time. The photography acts so well in tune with every other element of the film that I just adore it. With the film set almost entirely on the western plains it was sure to be a challenge for any DP to try and differentiate the look of the film from any western that has come before. Thankfully Wegner shot this film so expertly that while I think of westerns past this film is so its own film looks wise.

OUTSTANDING PRODUCTION DESIGN

AND THE WINNER:

PRODUCTION DESIGN BY STEFAN DECHANT; SET DECORATION BY NANCY HAIGH FOR THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH

These are the first wins for Stefan Dechant & Nancy Haigh. Haigh was previously nominated for The Truman Show (1998), O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) & Dreamgirls (2006).

2021's version of Macbeth while not the most original idea for a film doesn't mean there isn't a lot to love about it. There was so much to appreciate about the design of this film with its production design and sets being one of the most impressive parts of the film. The design was so theatrical which I really appreciated and helped to make this 2021 production standout. I especially loved the Macbeth castle where the majority of the film is set, it was just a spectacular set piece that kept revealing more of itself as the play continued to move.

OUTSTANDING FEMALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

AND THE WINNER:

RUTH NEGGA AS CLARE IN "PASSING"

This is the first win and nomination for Ruth Negga. She wins for performance as Clare in Passing.

While there were some really great performances by supporting women this past year my choice of Negga is perhaps the easiest amongst all of these award wins. Ruth Negga on first viewing has delivered a performance that instantly has become high on my list of the true greatest of cinema history. She is so captivating to watch throughout Passing playing so many varied emotions. From the confidently passing woman, the nostalgic person for their history, the frightened woman found out and so many more that I could be here all day listing the great elements of her performance.

Passing the film is obsessed with the image of Negga so it's not difficult to understand why you the viewer is obsessed with her. This role wasn't easy to play on the page I'm sure but some how Negga makes it feel effortless and as if she was a star from the earlier 20th century that has somehow travelled through the screen into the 21st century. Her not receiving an Oscar nomination this year feels so incorrect but I'm at least grateful that we still have this performance and there are many fans of it like myself out there.

OUTSTANDING VISUAL EFFECTS

AND THE WINNER:

PAUL LAMBERT, TRISTAN MYLES, BRIAN CONNOR & GERD NETZER FOR DUNE

This is the first win and nomination for Brian Connor. Paul Lambert and Gerd Netzer previously won for Blade Runner 2049 (2017). Lambert and Tristan Myles were nominated together for First Man (2018).

If Dune (part one) is to win any prize this year visual effects has to be that one citation. Money was spent on this show and while you may not enjoy certain parts of the film the visual effects have to be something unquestionably great. So many great visual splendors to behold throughout whether it's the giant sand worm that pops up or it's the gigantic cities that the characters move through.

OUTSTANDING DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

AND THE WINNER:

SUMMER OF SOUL (... OR, WHEN THE REVOLUTION COULD NOT BE TELEVISED) (DIRECTED BY AHMIR "QUESTLOVE" THOMPSON)

This is the first win and nomination for Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson.

Again I come to a situation where I could have awarded Flee but instead to spread the wealth I've decided to award the equally as great Summer of Soul with my documentary prize. What makes this piece of film making especially great is how fantastic the archived footage is all edited together. The footage and historical impact of the films subject is vital and important to behold for any fan of music. This is such an astounding piece of film making and should be appreciated by all. What also makes the film more impressive is how much fun the audience can have tuning in.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMER OF THE YEAR

AND THE WINNER:

ANDREW GARFIELD (THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE, SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME, TICK, TICK... BOOM!)

Garfield is one of those performers who my reaction towards him changes pretty regularly depending on the most recent project I've seen from him. 2021 sort've was the perfect time to be a fan of his because the elements that have made him work as a performer really hit well with each of his films released featuring him at his best.

The first of his films I saw was tick, tick... boom! which has obviously resulted in his second career Oscar nomination. He is so electric in the film and it has become high amongst his career best. He proved his skill for musical performance which was something we'd not been welcome to seeing before from him. Next was Eyes of Tammy Faye which had him play the real life husband of the titular character. He delivered well alongside Chastain in the film and while it's my least favourite of his films I still had a good time with him. Final to his trio of 2021 films was his return to the role of Peter Parker. I hadn't been a fan of his previous films playing the character but he was really fun this time around and it made for a great close to the year for him.

So all together his 2021 standouts high in the actors career and I hope he only continues to rise and grow to be one of the best of his generation.

OUTSTANDING ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

AND THE WINNER:

THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES (DIRECTED BY MIKE RIANDA)

This is the first win and nomination for Mike Rianda.

While Flee is my favourite films of those nominated here when I think about a really great film with equally as excellent animation I had to award this prize to Mitchells vs. the Machines. Not to say Flee is bad because it obviously isn't based on me nominating it but the animation of the Netflix feature Machines is so wonderful I sort've knew it be my winner from the moment I saw it at the beginning of 2021. The character designs are fun, the colours are bright and it's just a wild ride of a film clearly meant for all audiences to enjoy.

OUTSTANDING BREAKTHROUGH/DEBUT

AND THE WINNER:

MIKE FAIST (WEST SIDE STORY)

Russ Tamblyn was one of the truly great aspects of the 61 adaptation of West Side Story and taking over the part of Riff was gonna be difficult for any performer. Throw in this being Faists screen debut and expectations where high and thankfully Faist played his role expertly. His Riff was confident, caring and most importantly charismatic throughout. Faist managed to play both the strength and weakness of this character and really make you care for him throughout the film. This really was an impressive performance and based on how watchable he was as Riff I hope for great roles to come for Mike.

OUTSTANDING ENSEMBLE OF THE YEAR

AND THE WINNER:

WEST SIDE STORY (ANSEL ELGORT, ARIANA DEBOSE, DAVID ALVAREZ, MIKE FAIST, BRIAN D'ARCY JAMES, COREY STOLL, JOSH ANDRÉS RIVERA, RITA MORENO, RACHEL ZEGLER)

Yet again another win goes to the remake of West Side Story from me. The 2021 version of West Side Story if it improved on anything was having a really strong and unquestionable great ensemble that members of the 61 cast did not accomplish in my book. Every member of the cast was good if not great from the central couple, the supporting players whose lives and those little cameo roles which really expand the universe of the musical adaptation. It really was a pleasure to watch the film and I loved all cast members featured which gives them my win here.

Friday, March 11, 2022

OUTSTANDING SOUND

AND THE WINNER:

AKRITCHALERM KALAYANAMITR, RAÚL LOCATELLI & JAVIER UMPIERREZ FOR MEMORIA

These are the first wins and nomination for Akritchalerm Kalayanamitr, Raúl Locatelli & Javier Umpierrez.

What I believe is most standout about the sound design of Memoria is how purposely silent it can be for chunks of the screen time. With a lot of the film being silent and having you pay attention to the scenes when sound is featured it was so well crafted that I was over the moon by the sound artists who created it for this film. Memoria based on it's release schedule is likely to be an underseen film but I hope when those who've not seen it get their hands on it they realise how impressive he sound scape was for the film.

OUTSTANDING DIRECTOR

AND THE WINNER:

JANE CAMPION FOR THE POWER OF THE DOG

This is the second win and fifth nomination for Jane Campion having previously won for writing Power of the Dog. She was previously nominated for directing The Portrait of a Lady (1996) & Bright Star (2009). She was also nominated for writing Bright Star.

While there was a lot of great directing efforts this past year my choice of Campion as the winner is honestly a no brainer. There is a reason she has dominated the directing prizes this awards season so far and that is because her skill is so beyond and so effortless. With Dog she crafts yet another isolated yet large scale universe and it is so much to behold. Campion is easily one of histories greatest directors and has proven with her latest feature that she is beyond bloody brilliant.

P.S. I look forward to Campion winning the final directing prize at the academy awards especially as a fan of Campion for far too long. She has deserved this prize for over 30 years.
