OUTSTANDING LEADING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES

Asa Butterfield as Otis Milburn for ("Episode 6") in "SEX EDUCATION"
Larry David as Himself for ("Happy New Year") in "CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM"
Eugene Levy as Johnny Rose for ("The Pitch") in "SCHITT'S CREEK"
Eric McCormack as Will Truman for ("The Grief Panda") in "WILL & GRACE"
Andy Samberg as Jake Peralta for ("Manhunter") in "BROOKLYN NINE-NINE"
Ramy Youssef as Ramy Hassen for ("Bay’ah") in "RAMY"

AND THE WINNER IS:

EUGENE LEVY AS JOHNNY ROSE FOR ("THE PITCH") IN "SCHITT'S CREEK"

This is the second win and nomination for Eugene Levy. He previously won with the ensemble of Schitt's Creek (2019).

Levy played the least flashy role on SC however that is a negative on his performance. Playing the straight man in comedy is always the overlooked performer but Levy does it so well that he should not be ignored. He was the comforting presence throughout the series and if not for Johnny we could not have gotten the rest of the family without his fatherly strength. There were so many moments during this final season where he shone.

OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A COMEDY SERIES

Pamela Adlon for (“She’s Fifty”), Better Things
Kerry Washington for (“Lowkey Trying”), Insecure
Amy Sherman-Palladino for (“It's Comedy or Cabbage”), The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Desiree Akhavan for (“Uncle Naseem”), Ramy
Andrew Cividino & Daniel Levy for (“Happy Ending”), Schitt's Creek

AND THE WINNER IS:

DESIREE AKHAVAN FOR ("UNCLE NASEEM"), RAMY

This is the first win and nomination for Desiree Akhavan.

Desiree Akhavan a director/writer whose work I've seen in it's entirety was such a exciting discovery when watching Ramy season 2 and seeing her involvement in the penultimate episode of the season. The episode like many episodes of Ramy focuses on an individual and unlike any before it provided a side to a character on the show I would've never imagined. Akhavan's work in her two previous films has explored different areas of the queer community and bringing her delicacy from those features to this one episode was so satisfying to watch that I couldn't help but award it as the best directed comedy series episode of the year. I hope that in future seasons Akhavan is brought back to explore other secondary characters as she did with Uncle Naseem.

OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A COMEDY SERIES

Tony McNamara for (“The Great”), The Great
Phil Augusta Jackson for (“Lowkey Thankful”), Insecure
Natasha Rockwell for (“Lowkey Happy”), Insecure
David West Read for (“The Presidential Suite”), Schitt's Creek
Daniel Levy for (“Happy Ending”), Schitt's Creek

AND THE WINNER IS:

DANIEL LEVY FOR ("HAPPY ENDING"), SCHITT'S CREEK

This is the fourth win and fifth nomination for Daniel Levy. He previously won individually for Schitt's Creek (2018, 2020) and with the ensemble in 2019. He was also nominated individually in 2019.

(Noticing a trend) The final episode of Schitt's Creek was such a satisfying conclusion that I'd been building up for years ever since I began watching the show in it's first season. The episode had the perfect amount of comedy and heart that you'd expect from a show such as Schitt's. Levy with this series has shown he's an exciting creative talent and if I had my way would be given a large amount of money to create whatever he wanted to next.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES

Hiam Abbass as Maysa Hassan for ("They") in "RAMY"
Emily Hampshire as Stevie Budd for ("Start Spreading The News") in "SCHITT'S CREEK"
Rita Moreno as Lydia Riera for ("Boundaries") in "ONE DAY AT A TIME"
Annie Murphy as Alexis Rose for ("The Presidential Suite") in "SCHITT'S CREEK"
Yvonne Orji as Molly Carter for ("Lowkey Trippin") in "INSECURE"
Miriam Shor as Diana Trout for ("The Debu-taunt") in "YOUNGER"

AND THE WINNER IS:

ANNIE MURPHY AS ALEXIS ROSE FOR ("THE PRESIDENTIAL SUITE") IN SCHITT'S CREEK"

This is the second win and third nomination for Annie Murphy. She won with the ensemble Schitt's Creek (2019). She was also nominated individually last year.

Alexis Rose is the character from SC who I've come to care perhaps the most for since an initial curiosity for. It's all down to Murphy's work that the giant character arc that Alexis goes through is so successful. In this final season it was Murphy who gave the best performance having moments of great comedy, great heart and genuine heartbreak. In the episode where Alexis and Ted break up is one of the most upsetting moments on the show mainly due to the work by it's actors.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES

Mahershala Ali as Sheikh Ali Malik for ("Little Omar") in "RAMY"
Jay Ellis as Martin “Lawrence” Walker for ("Lowkey Happy") in "INSECURE"
Nicholas Hoult as Peter III of Russia for ("And you Sir, are no Peter the Great") in "THE GREAT"
Daniel Levy as David Rose for ("Happy Ending") in "SCHITT'S CREEK"
Leroy McClain as Shy Baldwin for ("Kind of Bleu") in "THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL"
Noah Reid as Patrick Brewer for ("Smoke Signals") in "SCHITT'S CREEK"

AND THE WINNER IS:

DANIEL LEVY AS DAVID ROSE FOR ("HAPPY ENDING") IN "SCHITT'S CREEK"

This is the third win and fourth nomination for Daniel Levy. He previously won for Schitt's Creek (2018) and with the ensemble in (2019). He was also nominated individually for Schitt's Creek (2019).

David Rose like all members of the Rose family will go down as one of the great television characters and Levy plays it so well that when I started with the show from it's inception it was always David whom I found myself blown away by. In this final season we see many great moments but none is like anything he does in the finale whether it's the funny reaction to his accidental wedding gift, his tender family moments and his wedding vows. It really is a fully rounded performance and I hope only the best for Levy as a performer in the years to come.

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES

Julie Dretzin as Eleanor Lawrence for (“Bear Witness”) in "THE HANDMAID'S TALE"
Cherry Jones as Nan Pierce for (“Argestes”) in "SUCCESSION"
Jane Lapotaire as Princess Alice for (“Bubbikins”) in "THE CROWN"
Sierra McClain as Tanya Clifton for (“Episode 3”) in "MINDHUNTER"
Jen Richards as Anna Madrigal for ("Days of Small Surrenders") in "TALES OF THE CITY"
Charlayne Woodard as Helena St. Rogers for (“Revelations”) in "POSE"

AND THE WINNER IS:

CHERRY JONES AS NAN PIERCE FOR ("ARGESTES") IN "SUCCESSION"

This is the second win and fourth nomination for Cherry Jones. She previously won as a member of the ensemble of Transparent (2017). She was also nominated for Cora Unashamed (2001) and with the ensemble of Transparent (2016).

Cherry Jones one of my many favourite character theatre actresses was a great addition to Succession this past season. It's difficult for any character to stand toe to toe with Logan Roy but Jones as Nan did just that and became one of my favourite elements of the season. From the moment Jones shows up in the middle episodes of the season I was confident she was going to magnificent which she was.

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES

Victor Garber as Clifton Sparks for ("Sunrise, Sunset") in "SCHITT'S CREEK"
Luke Kirby as Lenny Bruce for ("It's Comedy or Cabbage") in "THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL"
Dustin Milligan as Ted Mullens for ("The Presidential Suite") in "SCHITT'S CREEK"
Miss Coco Peru as Herself for ("Filthy Phil, Part 2") in "WILL & GRACE"
J.K. Simmons as Frank Dillman for ("Dillman") in "BROOKLYN NINE-NINE"
Rainn Wilson as Trevor Wells for ("Texas Pete and a Parking Lot Carnival") in "MOM"

AND THE WINNER IS:

DUSTIN MILLIGAN AS TED MULLENS FOR ("THE PRESIDENTIAL SUITE") IN "SCHITT'S CREEK"

This is the second win and nomination for Dustin Milligan. He was previously won with the ensemble of Schitt's Creek (2019).

Fans of SC for seasons would've come to greatly care for Alexis and Ted relationship but in this final season it wasn't meant for the two and in their final episode it proved to one of the highs of the entire last season. Mulligan has always been delightful as Ted but seeing the two agree to end things made the arc even sweeter and if it weren't played so well by the actors it could've been a slight moment of the series. It is heartbreaking that the two together couldn't have been a happy end but at least the break up was so well done.

Black Mirror (“Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too”)
The Crown (“Aberfan”)
Stranger Things (“Chapter Eight: The Battle of Starcourt”)

AND THE WINNER IS:

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Charles Dance as Lord Mountbatten for ("Coup") in "THE CROWN"
Raul Esparza as Brian Kneef for ("The Gang is Satirized and Doesn't Like It") in "THE GOOD FIGHT"
Damon Herriman as Charles Manson for ("Episode 5") in "MINDHUNTER"
Christopher Livingston as Wayne Williams for ("Episode 10") in "MINDHUNTER"
Simon Quarterman as Lee Sizemore for ("The Winter Line") in "WESTWORLD"
Alexander Skarsgård as Travis Stubbs for ("The Stinker Tinker") in "ON BECOMING A GOD IN CENTRAL FLORIDA"

AND THE WINNER IS:

DAMON HERRIMAN AS CHARLES MANSON FOR ("EPISODE 5") IN "MINDHUNTER"

This is the first win and nomination for Damon Herriman. He has won for his performance as Charles Manson this season of Mindhunter.

Similar to how Britton broke out the last time the show aired it was Herriman who ruled in his limited appearance as Charles Manson. He ruled during his one episode like many men on Mindhunter in a sit down interview with the show's central detectives. Herriman was subtly scary as the real life Manson and really sold the case for the show again and how underrated it is for it's once off guest stars.

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES

Vanessa Bayer as Debbie Fogel for ("Debbie") in "BROOKLYN NINE-NINE"
Isla Fisher as Carol for ("Insufficient Praise") in "CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM"
Stephanie Hsu as Young Shu Shu for ("Grandma & Chill") in "AWKWAFINA IS NORA FROM QUEENS"
Bette Midler as Hadassah Gold for ("Vienna") in "THE POLITICAN"
Suzy Nakamura as Karen for ("The Price You Pay") in "DEAD TO ME"
Kathleen Turner as Cookie for ("One Tiny Incision and a Coffin Dress") in "MOM"

AND THE WINNER IS:

KATHLEEN TURNER AS COOKIE FOR ("ONE TINY INCISION AND A COFFIN DRESS") IN "MOM"

This is the first win and second nomination for Kathleen Turner. She was previously nominated in this category for Friends (2001).

Turner like many women who've stepped into the universe that is Mom proves to be someone I'd welcome back again and again on the show. She may be playing a role which initially isn't the most likely of people but the way in which Turner plays it is so successful that even when she was acting so selfish towards Tammy I was enjoying it. I do wonder that when the next season eventually can get back into filming if they decide to bring Turner back like they have with many women who've guested on the show.

OUTSTANDING MUSIC COMPOSITION FOR A SERIES, MINISERIES OR MOVIE

Nathan Barr for (“And you Sir, are no Peter the Great”), The Great
Max Richter for (“The New Name”), My Brilliant Friend
Nicholas Britell for ("This Is Not For Tears"), Succession
Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross for (“She Was Killed by Space Junk”), Watchmen
Ramin Djawadi for (“Parce Domine”), Westworld

AND THE WINNER IS:

MAX RICHTER FOR ("THE NEW NAME"), MY BRILLIANT FRIEND

This is the third win and fifth nomination for Max Richter. He previously won for scoring The Leftovers (2015, 2017). He was also nominated for The Leftovers (2016) and My Brilliant Friend (2019).

Richter is one of the better composers currently working in entertainment yet his work is constantly overlooked. I admire his work greatly which is why I've awarded him basically ever other year for his work. I'll likely continue to reward him multiple times if his work continues to be as strong as it is.

AND THE WINNER IS:

ROBIN THEDE AS VARIOUS CHARACTERS IN "A BLACK LADY SKETCH SHOW"

This is the second win and nomination for Robin Thede. She also won as a part of the writing team for A Black Lady Sketch Show.

I really shouldn't be able to pick a better performer from the main cast of BLSS but something about Thede everything she shows up on screen draws me in. Whether it's when she's in boy drag, no makeup at all or attending a bad ass bitch meeting she has me in stiches.

American Dad! ("The Weeknd's Dark Secret")
The Eddy (“The Eddy”)
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ("One Less Angel")
RuPaul's Drag Race ("Madonna: The Unauthorized Rusical")
Succession ("L to the OG")

AND THE WINNER IS:

THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL ("ONE LESS ANGEL")

These are the first wins and nominations for Thomas Mizer & Curtis Moore for their song One Less Angel.

The more Maisel goes on the more it's turning into a musical and I proudly admit I'm not mad bout it. This season there was a lot of musical performances by Shy Baldwin and obviously the standout was One Less Angel. The song is so good you wouldn't be shocked it was a really big hit at the time just covered for the show.

The above sketch is I think my favourite from the season because I constantly find myself returning to it and dying.

Debra Hanson for (“Happy Ending”), Schitt's Creek

AND THE WINNER IS:

ANTONELLA CANNAROZZI FOR ("THE NEW NAME"), MY BRILLIANT FRIEND

This is the first win and nomination for Antonella Cannarozzi.

If there's a show from my entire lineup of tv watching that I wish more people were watching it is My Brilliant Friend. The show while already great in it's first season had a major step in it's second entering into from a design prospect my favourite decades the mid 20th century. The costumes were wonderfully colourful like most of the show and throughout this season I was loving all the design.

OUTSTANDING CASTING FOR A SERIES, MINISERIES OR MOVIE

Carmen Cuba for Mrs. America
Louise Kiely & Karen Scully for Normal People
Alexa L. Fogel for Pose
Avy Kaufman for Succession
Victoria Thomas for Watchmen

AND THE WINNER IS:

LOUISE KIELY & KAREN SCULLY FOR NORMAL PEOPLE

These are the first wins and nominations for Louise Kiely & Karen Scully.

It's hard to deny how great Normal People was and of course one of the most exciting elements was the discovery of so many new talents. Maybe the fact that a lot of the actors featured are Irish is what's most thrilling for me but honestly the show was cast so well from the smallest of roles that I had no choice but to reward these women for great casting.

Saturday, August 8, 2020

OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A VARIETY, MUSIC OR COMEDY SERIES/SPECIAL

Glenn Weiss for 73rd Annual Tony Awards
Dime Davis for A Black Lady Sketch Show
Andre Allen for Full Frontal with Samantha Bee
Paul Pennolino & Christopher Werner for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
Hamish Hamilton for Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show Starring Jennifer Lopez And Shakira

AND THE WINNER IS:

DIME DAVIS FOR A BLACK LADY SKETCH SHOW

This is the first win and nomination for Dime Davis.

If you've not watched all the episodes of Black Lady Sketch Show what is wrong with you It was easily one of the better series to premier this past season. Davis directed every episode of the season and was of course great enough to win this award I'm hoping she can somehow win because it will be so boring if someone like Don Roy King wins for the thousand time for SNL.

Maya Rudolph as Connie the Hormone Monstress for "BIG MOUTH"

AND THE WINNER IS:

PAGET BREWSTER AS PAIGE SINCLAIR FOR "BOJACK HORSEMAN"

This is the first win and nomination for Paget Brewster.

When you are playing a combination of Katharine Hepburn in Philadelphia Story and Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday I'm invested. Brewster really burst out in the final season of BoJack playing this one character I found constantly entertaining.

Wednesday, August 5, 2020

The all stars season of Top Chef was the best the show has been in a while and of my limited reality show viewing it had the best season for reality-competition so deserves all awards related to it's genre.

Sunday, August 2, 2020

OUTSTANDING CINEMATOGRAPHY FOR A SERIES, MINISERIES OR MOVIE

Marshall Adams for (“Bagman”), Better Call Saul
Ava Berkofsky for (“Lowkey Thankful”), Insecure
Erik Messerschmidt for (“Episode 5”), Mindhunter
Hélène Louvart for (“The Kiss”), My Brilliant Friend
Gregory Middleton for (“This Extraordinary Being”), Watchmen

AND THE WINNER IS:

GREGORY MIDDLETON FOR ("THIS EXTRAORDINARY BEING"), WATCHMEN

This is the first win and nomination for Gregory Middleton. He has won for his cinematography for Watchmen.

The television adaptation of Watchmen was simply one of the best things to air on TV during this past season. Only being 9 episodes long there was no wasted minute of screen time and for me the standout hour for the show was it's departure flashback episode where rather than following Sister Night the episode flashed back to giving the origin story of the Hooded Justice played by Joven Adepo (inspired Emmy nomination). The episode entirely shot in black and white is gorgeous. I remember I was a bit late to watching the episode initially and hearing so many praising the episode I can say I was not disappointed by the excellence featured. The above clip is one of many examples in which Middleton captured the show so wonderfully.

21st "An Irish Person" TV Awards ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

Welcome yet again to my rundown of what I consider to be the best in television of the year. This time it's for the 2019-2020 TV season. I watch and love a lot of tv so my nominees usually cover a variety of different shows. With being stuck home for the final 3 months of this season I managed to catch up some shows which I hadn't had the time for prior. I will be starting to announce nominees and winners in all categories daily leading up to the actual Primetime Emmy Awards which this year will air on September 20th. I will start tomorrow with "Outstanding Cinematography for a Series, Miniseries or Movie".
