OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A COMEDY SERIES

Pamela Adlon for (“She’s Fifty”), Better Things
Kerry Washington for (“Lowkey Trying”), Insecure
Amy Sherman-Palladino for (“It's Comedy or Cabbage”), The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Desiree Akhavan for (“Uncle Naseem”), Ramy
Andrew Cividino & Daniel Levy for (“Happy Ending”), Schitt's Creek

AND THE WINNER IS:

DESIREE AKHAVAN FOR ("UNCLE NASEEM"), RAMY

This is the first win and nomination for Desiree Akhavan.

Desiree Akhavan a director/writer whose work I've seen in it's entirety was such a exciting discovery when watching Ramy season 2 and seeing her involvement in the penultimate episode of the season. The episode like many episodes of Ramy focuses on an individual and unlike any before it provided a side to a character on the show I would've never imagined. Akhavan's work in her two previous films has explored different areas of the queer community and bringing her delicacy from those features to this one episode was so satisfying to watch that I couldn't help but award it as the best directed comedy series episode of the year. I hope that in future seasons Akhavan is brought back to explore other secondary characters as she did with Uncle Naseem.
