27th "An Irish Person" FILM Awards RECAP!!

2022 was an interesting year for film because the spread of great films this year considered great by and myself and of course the academy was more spread throughout the 12 month calendar year. This year I managed to recognise 52 films with at least one nomination. Obviously Everything Everywhere All at Once scored over ten nominations but when it comes to the rest of my nominees the wealth was much more spread and that is because there was a lot to appreciate about films in many different departments. My top 10 goes to show how varied the really great films were this year.

1. Everything Everywhere All At Once

2. Aftersun

3. The Woman King

4. Happening

5. TÁR

6. Great Freedom

7. Neptune Frost

8. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande

9. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On

10. All the Beauty and the Bloodshed

OUTSTANDING PICTURE

Aftersun (Produced by Adele Romanski, Amy Jackson, Barry Jenkins & Mark Ceryak)
Everything Everywhere All At Once (Produced by Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert & Jonathan Wang)
Happening (Produced by Edouard Weil Alice Girard)
TÁR (Produced by Todd Field, Alexandra Milchan & Scott Lambert)
The Woman King (Produced by Cathy Schulman, Viola Davis, Julius Tennon & Maria Bello)

AND THE WINNER:

EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE (PRODUCED BY DANIEL KWAN, DANIEL SCHEINERT & JAMES WANG)

This is the first win and nomination for James Wang. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert have each won their second award on their third nomination. They both won screenplay for Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) and were also nominated for directing for the same film. With this prize Everything Everywhere All At Once wins seven awards from its twelve nominations. The film won for picture, leading actress (Yeoh), supporting actor (Quan), supporting actress (Hsu), original screenplay, costume design and film editing. It was also nominated for director, ensemble, production design, sound & visual effects.

EEAAO (Everything Everywhere All at Once) is truly the film of 2022 and has been since I first saw the film on 16th May of 2022. I knew absolutely nothing going into the film other than Michelle Yeoh starred and that the film was directed by the Daniels who'd previously directed 2016's Swiss Army Man. I was floored immediately by the film and with each rewatch (3 more times currently) I have fallen in love even more with finding no issues with the film and thinking it to be practically perfect. I am just so glad that I am not alone in thinking the film is perfect and that when we revalute the film year in the decades to come I'm sure we will all still the film to be the best of the year.

OUTSTANDING FEMALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

Cate Blanchett as Lydia Tár / Linda Tarr in “TÁR”
Guslagie Malanda as Laurence Coly in “SAINT OMER”
Thuso Mbedu as Nawi in “THE WOMAN KING”
Janelle Monáe as Cassandra Brand in “GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY”
Michelle Yeoh as Evelyn Quan Wang in “EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE”

AND THE WINNER:

MICHELLE YEOH AS EVELYN QUAN WANG IN "EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE"

This is the first win and third nomination for Michelle Yeoh. She was previously nominated individually for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2000) and with the ensemble of Crazy Rich Asians (2018). She wins for her performance as Evelyn Quan Wang in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Since first seeing EEAAO back in May of 2022 I knew that Michelle Yeoh's incredible performance was going to be a serious contender for being named my favourite leading actress performance of the year. I have seen a lot of great work by leading actresses since but truly none has outdone Yeoh and this was made even clearer on a rewatch of the film I did in the final couple weeks of the year. Yeoh has been an incredibly reliable screen performer for the entirety of her filmography and while she's gotten chances to display her skill (like in her Crouching Tiger performance which I previously nominated her for) with Evelyn Wang she was given a role unlike anything she's ever gotten to play.

First of all this film is obsessed with Yeoh and supplies her with a plethora of characters and moments to play with Michelle knocking each moment out of the park. The above scene which I've included to highlight Yeoh's work is a great culmination of everything she has done during the film and it is just a marvellous turn that I found great joy in experiecing Michelle just dominate the picture. Honestly no one could play this role as Yeoh did and that is another positive in her corner as this is a singular turn acting as a great include many elements of Yeoh's career but also as the opportunity to witness her act in ways she's not been asked to before.

I could go on for a very long time discussing the greatness of Michelle Yeoh in EEAAO but to write one final note, one of the greatest parts of all the deserved praise that Yeoh is getting is the chance to award an actress of an older age for both her career and a revolutionary moment in her lengthy career.

OUTSTANDING MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING

Alexandra Anger, Monica Pavez & Evi Zafiropoulou for Crimes of the Future
Kentake Chinyelu-Hope, Nicole Stafford & Chang-Im Kim for Men
Sacha Carter, Stefani Pellegrini, Maralyn Sherman & David White for The Northman
Sarah Rubano for X
Adrien Morot, Judy Chin & Anne Marie Bradley for The Whale

AND THE WINNER:

ALEXANDRA ANGER, MONICA PAVEZ & EVI ZAFIROPOULOU FOR CRIMES OF THE FUTURE

These are the first wins and nominations for Alexandra Anger, Monica Pavez & Evi Zafiropoulou.

Sometimes going for the heavy prosthetic film in this category can be the boring and lazy choice but since seeing the film since May of 2022 I've not been able to get the makeup imagery of Crimes of the Future to leave my head. The film while not my favourite overall I cannot deny the great production work on the film especially by the hair and makeup department who because of Cronenberg's vision are allowed run wild with so many creative makeup creations.

The Ear man is obviously a standout creation and reason enough to award the film but there are so many other creations to discover throughout the film that I couldn't help myself from wanting to award it my makeup trophy for 2022. If your unsure of checking out the film simply look at photos and scenes from it because the imagery when in live action can be quite frightening but for me that what makes me enjoy the work even more.

OUTSTANDING MALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

Jack Lowden as Siegfried Sassoon in “BENEDICTION”
Daryl McCormack as Leo Grande / Connor in “GOOD LUCK TO YOU, LEO GRANDE”
Paul Mescal as Calum in “AFTERSUN”
Jeremy Pope as Ellis French in “THE INSPECTION”
Franz Rogowski as Hans Hoffmann in “GREAT FREEDOM”

AND THE WINNER:

FRANZ ROGOWSKI AS HANS HOFFMANN IN "GREAT FREEDOM"

This is the first win and nomination for Franz Rogowski. He wins for his performance as Hans Hoffmann in Great Freedom.

While an exceptional list of leading actor performances this year none have shook me to my core as much as Franz Rogowski performance in Great Freedom. The film doesn't call upon Rogowski to explode emotionally often instead you as the audience appreciate the subtleness and stillness that he brings to the role. Franz reveals so much about his character through the smaller moves he takes throughout created a controlled and confident character that leads to film and makes the film as effecting as it is. Rogowski has showcased times before this film but especially in this role how expressive his face can be revealing the emotional journey from the inside out.

If anything is similar between all five of my nominees here it's how emotional each character is behind their put upon hard exterior and Rogowski has managed to outdo his co-nominees this year with his gift for being both strong and weak at the same time. His work is so impressive that it has stuck with me since I experienced the film nearly a year ago. I hope Franz can continue to impressive during this coming decade and have more roles like the one he is playing here.

OUTSTANDING DIRECTOR

Alice Diop for Saint Omer
Audrey Diwan for Happening
Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert for Everything Everywhere All at Once
Gina Prince-Bythewood for The Woman King
Charlotte Wells for Aftersun

AND THE WINNER:

CHARLOTTE WELLS FOR AFTERSUN

This is the first win and second nomination for Charlotte Wells. She was also nominated this year for screenwriting Aftersun (2022).

I first heard about Aftersun after it's world premiere at the Cannes film festival and I was not to know that 6 months later I'd get the opportunity to see the film and immediately fall in love with it. The main reason for my love of this film comes from director/writer Charlotte Wells who has created such an exciting and fabulous debut feature film. I connected so hard with this film as it brought me instantly back to my youth and family holidays and how they could be both the greatest moment of a young child's life but also the most upsetting. This film got it so right and I give a lot of that credit to Wells who presented everything so honestly I almost thought this was a documented piece rather than a piece of fiction.

What I also appreciate about Wells direction is how perfectly blended the portable camera footage is blended with the film camera footage. It becomes an even greater memory piece when these filmed materials are put together to tell the story of this young father and daughter on their holiday to Greece. I am glad that many people have discovered and fallen in love with Wells' as I have and that those who love her work will continue to follow her career as I hope she makes more great films.

OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL SONG

“Love is Not Love”, Bros (Music by Marc Shaiman; Lyrics by Billy Richner)
“Ciao Papa”, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (Music by Alexandre Desplat; Lyrics by Roeban Katz & Guillermo del Toro)
“On My Way”, Marry Me (Music and Lyrics by Ivy Adara, Leroy Clampitt and Michael Pollack)
“Naatu Naatu”, RRR (Music by M.M. Keeravani; Lyrics by Chandrabose)
“Nobody Like U”, Turning Red (Music and Lyrics by Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell)

AND THE WINNER:

"NAATU NAATU", RRR (MUSIC BY M.M. KEERAVANI; LYRICS BY CHANDRABOSE)

These are the first wins for M.M. Keeravani & Chandrabose.

Choosing a winner among my nominees was very difficult as I simply adore all of these songs finding each amazing as both singular songs but even more incredible based on their placement in their films. What made me finally decide on 'Naatu Naatu' as my winner was based on which song has stayed with me the most in my mind. Musically the song is infectious with each new musical beat greater than the one in succeeded. Lyrically the song is just as wonderful matching the musical beats and making for one of the years greatest scenes and one of its most surprising also.

It is incredible how much this movie has stayed with audiences throughout the year and when it contains scenes such as this extended musical sequence it makes absolute sense why the film has been a favourite of many. Truly an incredible song that I happy to see many including myself falling in love with.

OUTSTANDING PRODUCTION DESIGN

Production Design by Jason Kisvarday; Set Decoration by Kelsi Ephraim for Everything Everywhere All at Once

Production Design by Rick Heinrichs; Set Decoration by Elli Griff for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Production Design by Helen Scott; Set Decoration by Sarah Kane for Living

Production Design by Cedric Mizero & Antoine Nshimiyimana for Neptune Frost

Production Design by Ruth De Jong; Set Decoration by Gene Serdena for Nope

AND THE WINNER:

PRODUCTION DESIGN BY RICK HEINRICHS; SET DECORATION BY ELI GRIFF FOR GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY

These are the first wins for Rick Heinrichs & Elli Griff. Heinrichs was previously nominated for his production design for Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017).

Just for the titular Glass Onion alone it was an easy decision to choose the Knives Out sequel as this years best production design. Everything about the set in which the majority of the film takes place is extravagant and absolutely gorgeous. Whether it's the main glass office, the multiple rooms in which the guests of Miles Bron stay or even the extra locations such as the poolside part of the island it is a lot to take in and so well designed. You do sort of have to live in a fantasy land when it comes to the films production design and honestly the sets where so well designed that it was very easy for me to get over that.

The first film had a well designed house as we all know and with this just as greatly designed sequel I look forward to how far Johnson and his team of designers are gonna go when they revisit this universe which I'm pretty sure they will.

OUTSTANDING DOCUMENTARY

Aftershock (Directed by Paula Eiselt and Tonya Lewis Lee)
All That Breathes (Directed by Shaunak Sen)
All the Beauty and the Bloodshed (Directed by Laura Poitras)
Descendant (Directed by Margaret Brown)
Fire of Love (Directed by Sara Dosa)

AND THE WINNER:

ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED (DIRECTED BY LAURA POITRAS)

These are the first win and third nomination for Laura Poitras. She was previously nominated for the documentaries The Oath (2010) and Citizenfour (2014).

Going into Beauty and Bloodshed I had no idea what the subject matter of the documentary was and was mostly intrigued by the name chosen for the project. Having watched the film I was unprepared for how spectacular and moving this documentary would be. The central subject of Nan Gold was such a compelling figure and the points in history that were covered because of her involvement in them was so compelling and so unexpected every time the film revealed more information. When the film discussed the history of the AIDS crisis I must admit I became deeply upset and involved as I too yearn for the lost art and artists the film discusses because of the loss of a generation. The film really sold how devastating that point of history was and linking it to modern times felt so honest and real that I enjoyed each section of the film so much.

Poitras yet again has showcased her incredible skill for documentary story telling as she explores so many unexpected themes from her subjects that you the audience are never fully ready for. I am so happy to finally award her after multiple nominations in my documentary categories.

OUTSTANDING FILM EDITING

Kogonada for After Yang
Blair McClendon for Aftersun
Kim Sang-beom for Decision to Leave
Paul Rogers for Everything Everywhere All at Once
Monika Willi for Tár

AND THE WINNER:

PAUL ROGERS FOR EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE

This is the first win and nomination for Paul Rogers.

Incredible film editing is absolutely one of the most important elements of why Everything Everywhere All at Once works as a film. With so many scenes moving so quickly between many different universes strong editing is necessary to keep the audiences attention and thankfully with Paul Rogers editing the jumping through universes worked incredible well. For me there was not a wasted shot featured and everything flowed so well together that I couldn't keep my eyes away from the screen.

What also made the quicker scenes work was when the film took a moment to slow down and focus on the character beats those moments worked just as well. Truly the film would be much less effecting emotionally were it not for strong film editing so I simply say bravo to Rogers the editor chosen for this film.

OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL SCORE

Carter Burwell for The Banshees of Inisherin
Jo Yeong-wook for Decision to Leave
Alexandre Desplat for Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio
Terence Blanchard for The Woman King
Hildur Guðnadóttir for Women Talking

AND THE WINNER:

HILDUR GUÐNADÓTTIR FOR WOMEN TALKING

This is the first win and nomination for Hildur Guðnadóttir.

I will start this by saying three years ago when awards voters became obsessed with Hildur Guðnadóttirs score for Joker i didn't really get the appeal of it other than simply liking the score but not thinking it was the best of the year. I am so happy to say that based on her film work which has followed in 2022 I am now in the boat of considering her one of the best composers currently working. It's worth mentioning her contributions to TÁR firstly as there was some great musical work there. Now that I've said that on to her Women Talking work which like everything in that film is some incredible work.

The way her score is used throughout is so effective and adds to this incredible film. The music really added to the setting of the film between the dialogue heavy scenes as we got to see in an almost montage like style many shots of the community that lived in the films commune. As the film approached its ending and the score swelled more I was already sold on the incredible work from before and it was so well included that I simply adored the work. I was sad not to see Hildur Guðnadóttir not awarded with a score nomination this year given her previous success with that category but even so I'm glad say I love her work and am happy to award her compositions by original score award.
