OUTSTANDING MALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

Jack Lowden as Siegfried Sassoon in “BENEDICTION”
Daryl McCormack as Leo Grande / Connor in “GOOD LUCK TO YOU, LEO GRANDE”
Paul Mescal as Calum in “AFTERSUN”
Jeremy Pope as Ellis French in “THE INSPECTION”
Franz Rogowski as Hans Hoffmann in “GREAT FREEDOM”

AND THE WINNER:

FRANZ ROGOWSKI AS HANS HOFFMANN IN "GREAT FREEDOM"

This is the first win and nomination for Franz Rogowski. He wins for his performance as Hans Hoffmann in Great Freedom.

While an exceptional list of leading actor performances this year none have shook me to my core as much as Franz Rogowski performance in Great Freedom. The film doesn't call upon Rogowski to explode emotionally often instead you as the audience appreciate the subtleness and stillness that he brings to the role. Franz reveals so much about his character through the smaller moves he takes throughout created a controlled and confident character that leads to film and makes the film as effecting as it is. Rogowski has showcased times before this film but especially in this role how expressive his face can be revealing the emotional journey from the inside out.

If anything is similar between all five of my nominees here it's how emotional each character is behind their put upon hard exterior and Rogowski has managed to outdo his co-nominees this year with his gift for being both strong and weak at the same time. His work is so impressive that it has stuck with me since I experienced the film nearly a year ago. I hope Franz can continue to impressive during this coming decade and have more roles like the one he is playing here.
