AND THE WINNER:

SCREENPLAY BY SARAH POLLEY; BASED ON WOMEN TALKING BY MIRIAM TOEWS, WOMEN TALKING

This is the second win and fifth nomination for Sarah Polley. She previously won for her documentary Stories We Tell (2013). She was nominated for individually and with the ensemble of The Sweet Hereafter (1997) and for writing Away from Her (2007).

Sarah Polley's return to film has been long and so awaited by me. She's not made a feature film since 2013 with her documentary Stories We Tell and speaking of stories she has returned with yet another incredible film this past year with Women Talking. Here I am awarding her the adapted screenplay prize which is so well deserved. What I appreciate most about this screenplay is how equal the attention that is given to the ensemble to shin throughout with many of the ensemble members giving performances I consider incredibly effective. The use of narration can sometimes be a questionable choice on film but it worked so effectively when sparsely used that I never grew tired of the interjections by a voice outside those of the women on screen.

Polley is simply a talented film maker and given the success she has had with Women Talking I hope she can regularly make films again because I do not want to wait another decade to enjoy a film from her because based on all the films she's made she has showcased she is one of cinemas most exciting film directors.
