OUTSTANDING FEMALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

AND THE WINNER:

RUTH NEGGA AS CLARE IN "PASSING"

This is the first win and nomination for Ruth Negga. She wins for performance as Clare in Passing.

While there were some really great performances by supporting women this past year my choice of Negga is perhaps the easiest amongst all of these award wins. Ruth Negga on first viewing has delivered a performance that instantly has become high on my list of the true greatest of cinema history. She is so captivating to watch throughout Passing playing so many varied emotions. From the confidently passing woman, the nostalgic person for their history, the frightened woman found out and so many more that I could be here all day listing the great elements of her performance.

Passing the film is obsessed with the image of Negga so it's not difficult to understand why you the viewer is obsessed with her. This role wasn't easy to play on the page I'm sure but some how Negga makes it feel effortless and as if she was a star from the earlier 20th century that has somehow travelled through the screen into the 21st century. Her not receiving an Oscar nomination this year feels so incorrect but I'm at least grateful that we still have this performance and there are many fans of it like myself out there.
