OUTSTANDING MALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Raúl Castillo as Paps in “WE THE ANIMALS”
Hugh Grant as Phoenix Buchanan in “PADDINGTON 2”
Brian Tyree Henry as Daniel Carty in “IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK”
Russell Hornsby as Maverick ‘Mav’ Carter in “THE HATE YOU GIVE”
Steven Yeun as Ben in “BURNING”
AND THE WINNER IS:

HUGH GRANT AS PHOENIX BUCHANAN IN “PADDINGTON 2”

This is the first win and nomination for Hugh Grant. He wins for his performance as Phoenix Buchanan in Paddington 2.

I saw this film all the way back in December 2017 and even then I knew that it be hard to beat this performance. Grant as the loveable villan Phoenix is a delightful encapsulation of Grant as an actor as well as the struggle in is to be British theatre actor. Seeing Grant clearly having fun in this role as he bounces through the entirety of the film made for one of the most pleasurable film experiences of last year. Even just thinking about the finale musical number and how he just exudes confidence and charm makes for a wonderful performance. Now that it seems Grant has partially returned to great work I hope he continues to deliver like he did as Phoenix.
