This is the first win and nomination for Cameron Britton.

Cameron Britton is one of the those seemingly overnight stars for his breakout performance as real-life serial killer Edmund Kemper. While only featured in three episodes his presence like his height loomed large throughout the entire first season of the Netflix drama. He was quiet and frightening whenever featured on the series and captured my entire attention. He really blew me away in the season finale in his final confrontation with Jonathan Groff’s central character. I do hope that while it seems most who made through the series talk about Britton that his success doesn’t push the creators to overuse him. I do hope he does return but in small amounts like he was in this first season. Bravo to Britton for his captivating work.

This is the first win and fourth nomination for Diana Rigg. She was previously nominated for Victoria & Albert (2001), Charles II: The Power and the Passion (2004) & Game of Thrones (2013).

Ever since her introduction in Season three each moment with Olenna Tyrell has been glorious. Most of her screen time was spent judging everything around her and I for one wouldn’t have had it any other way. She’s like fellow Dame Maggie Smiths Dowager Countess but turned up to eleven and more prickly than Smith. While in this most recent season she had limited screen time her send off was one of the highest points of the rather weak season. It has to be one of the greatest exits for a character ever to be shown on television. She was as confident and strong as she’d ever been on the series and in this single scene she shows why even though she’s lost she hasn’t fully because it is her final choice to leave with the last words.

I really do not appreciate how underrated the second series of Top of the Lake was received. I can understand people’s criticisms for the representation of asian characters on the show but I still found myself marvelled by the series. In terms of Makeup the creation of Nicole Kidman’s Julia was wonderful. Unlike Kidman’s previous work with obvious prosthetics I found her look entirely believable compared to Kidman’s usual look outside the character. The makeup for the rest of the series character’s were also great even though Julia was an obvious example of the use of makeup.

Similar to the costume department captured the greatness of 1950’s new york the hairstyling team matched this department to complete the look for Midge and the entire ensemble. Great hairstyling doesn’t have to be flashy colours and styles. It can be greatly period specific like featured in this series. This episode like the costume winner dives into Jane Lynch’s appearance on the show and making such a contemporary actor like Lynch fit into this period and universe shows the greatness of this show’s hair department.

GAME OF THRONES (“THE SPOILS OF WAR”)

This is the sixth win and seventh nomination for the visual effects team of Game of Thrones. This year’s winners include Joe Bauer, Steve Kullback, Adam Chazen, Michelle Blok, Sam Conway, Ted Rae, David Ramos, Wayne Stables & Derek Spears.

Game of Thrones returned after over a year off the air last summer and while it was a largely disappointing season plot-wise the money that is dedicated to the visual effects department is well spent when the various visual pleasures are created. Each year it seems like the fantasy budget is bigger and this particular episode featured the entire fight where Dany and her main dragon showed their true power. This entire sequence was probably the best of the season because it finally showed how powerful these long-promised dragons could be. While we wait for the final six episodes we can only guess what large-scale visual effects are awaiting us.

This is the first win and fourth nomination for Alexandra Billings. She was previously nominated with the ensemble of Transparent (2015-2017).

Alexandra has been a pretty consistent guest star on Transparent for its entire run and this season while less successful featured a wonderful episode focused on her character that gave Billings the chance to play so much. She as an actress contains a natural charisma and this episode provides us with some earlier moments of Davina that provide a greater look into this character that we as an audience have seen as the inspiration for Moira to fully embrace her new self. It might not be the most traditional comedy series but as tv progresses the traditional comedy mode is opening up to embrace shows like Transparent.
