OUTSTANDING FEMALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

Vicky Krieps as Alma Elson in “PHANTOM THREAD”
Cynthia Nixon as Emily Dickinson in “A QUIET PASSION”
Florence Pugh as Katherine Lester in “LADY MACBETH”
Saoirse Ronan as Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson in “LADY BIRD”
Kristen Stewart as Maureen Cartwright in “PERSONAL SHOPPER”

AND THE WINNER IS:

KRISTEN STEWART AS MAUREEN CARTWRIGHT IN “PERSONAL SHOPPER”

This is the first win and second nomination for Kristen Stewart. She was previously nominated for Clouds of Sils Maria (2015).

Stewart came to my attention in Panic Room 15 years ago and since it has been a struggle to respond to her work mainly from her involvement in the Twilight and Snow White franchise. Thankfully Oliver Assayas noticed something in her and cast her in his film Clouds of Sils Maria where many including myself feel for her work. Her second feature with him is one of those films that you either love or hate. I love the film and a lot of that rests on the leading performance given by Stewart, Assyas knows her strength clearly and really plays up them as she deliveries an expert reactionary performance. This film has Stewart responding to sounds, images and anything else that you find in a tense film. The extended text messaging scene in any other actors hand wouldn't have worked by Stewart's talent to feel effortless really shows in that sequence. I'm in wonder of Stewart and cannot wait till those Twilight haters really appreciate the work she has put in to prove she is more then that franchise of films.
