OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A DRAMA SERIES

Karyn Kusama for ("The Threshold"), Halt and Catch Fire
Reed Morano for ("Late"), The Handmaid's Tale
Mimi Leder for ("The Book of Nora"), The Leftovers
Ray McKinnon for ("All I'm Sayin'"), Rectify
Vincenzo Natali for ("Dissonance Theory"), Westworld

AND THE WINNER IS:

REED MORANO FOR ("LATE"), THE HANDMAID'S TALE

This is the first win and nomination for Reed Morano. She wins for directing The Handmaid's Tale.

From the start The Handmaid's Tale was visually distinct. This esthetic was masterfully set up by dp turned director Reed Morano. The choices made within the first 3 eps directed by Morano really affected the methods in which people directed the show for the following 7 episodes. The third episode is still probably my favourite episode of the series as the momentum of the show seemed to pick up in this episodes. The episode featured the end to the Ofglen storyline with that horrifying closing chapter where she was mutilated with against her will. The shot set up that I always return to was the hanging scene where we see everything through the back door of a truck where a character watches her lover hang. Truly great work by Morano for this series setting up a distinct visual esthetic that I love on this series.
