OUTSTANDING CINEMATOGRAPHY

Hong Kyung-pyo for Burning
Robbie Ryan for The Favourite
James Laxton for If Beale Street Could Talk
Alfonso Cuaron for Roma
Zak Mulligan for We the Animals

AND THE WINNER IS:

JAMES LAXTON FOR IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK

This is the second win and nomination for James Laxton. He previously won for Moonlight (2016). From the opening shot alone I knew this film would probably be winning my award for cinematography. Laxton and Jenkins make for dream collaborators and yet again the two together have crafted stunning shot compositions. The camera in this film reflects the central romance as we gaze at the beauty of Fonny and take it the new romantic feelings being felt by Tish. Aside from the stunning opening there are plenty of other shots that stun including the way in which the first love scene being shared between the central couple is captured. Laxton has branched out apart from Jenkins but I do hope that whenever Jenkins next works that Laxton his fellow Floridian University graduate continues to collaborate with him.
