OUTSTANDING SOUND EDITING

Glenn Freemantle for Annihilation
Ai-Ling Lee and Mildred Iatrou Morgan for First Man
Lewis Goldstein for Hereditary
Ethan Van der Ryn and Erik Aadahl for A Quiet Place
Sergio Díaz and Skip Lievsay for Roma

AND THE WINNER IS:

ETHAN VAN DER RYN AND ERIK AADAHI FOR A QUIET PLACE

This is the first win and third nomination for Erik Aadahl. He was previously nominated for The Tree of Life (2011) & Godzilla (2014). This is Ethan Van der Ryn’s third win and sixth nomination. He previously won for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) & King Kong (2005). He was also nominated for X-Men (2000), The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003) & Godzilla.

For a film devoid of speaking as the characters would die if they did, A Quiet Place required a lot of inventive sound choices to make the film captivating to watch. There is so much drama and tension every time a sound is heard whether it’s characters moving objects or them breathing, each featured sound is entirely effective. The two sound editors on this film had the difficult task of being one of the central elements of the feature as the plot relayed on sound and how when it was heard it could possibly end the lifes of the family at the center.
