OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL SCORE

Ben Salisbury & Geoff Barrow for Annihilation
Terence Blanchard for BlacKkKlansman
Nicholas Britell for If Beale Street Could Talk
Max Richter for Mary Queen of Scots
Jonny Greenwood for You Were Never Really Here

AND THE WINNER IS:

NICHOLAS BRITELL FOR IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK

This is the first win and second nomination for Nicholas Britell. He was previously nominated for Moonlight (2016). Similar to how Laxton works perfectly with Jenkins, so to does Britell who returns as the composer for Jenkins Moonlight follow up. The musical score is so important to the story being told in this Baldwin adaptation, the music like the photography reflects the dream like romance and the horrific consequences of injustice being done to Fonny. The above track is the most instantly recognizable musical moment as it was featured from early marketing for the film and just is solely associated with this picture. I can't really come up with the words of how to describe how this score made me feel and I can only encourage those who haven't to watch the film and listen to the score after watching the film as it has heavy staying power.
