This is the first win and second nomination for Chris Sanders & Dean DeBlois. They were previously nominated together for directing Lilo & Stitch (2001).
This was a great year for animated films and any of my nominees could easily turn out to be my top pick for this year but How to Train Your Dragon just has something special about it that makes my eventual choice. The film is just so fun throughout, has an incredible score and just feels like an animated film unlike any other before. There is some beautiful computer generated animation in the multiple flying scenes and Toothless the dragon is such a beautiful animated creation.
