This is the first win and nomination for Leonardo Simões.
Vitalina Varela is if anything a stunningly beautiful film. I admit the film is slow and may not be for everyone but if you are looking to experience and appreciate the beauty of cinema you must make an effort in checking out this film. The films lighting is such an integurial part of its storytelling as it helps to emphasis the darkness and light central to the story being told. The film is mostly silent and while there is a story to be told it comes across in an almost dreamlike sense as it's the visuals which stay with you most of all post experiencing the film.
