AND THE WINNER IS:

PRODUCTION DESIGN BY JUDY BECKER; SET DESIGN BY HEATHER LOEFFLER FOR CAROL

This is the first win for Judy Becker & Heather Loeffler for the design work on Carol. The two were previously nominated together for American Hustle (2013) and Becker was also nominated for her work on I’m Not There (2007).

Carol is so too beautiful for words to a point where praising every aspect with a win just seems obvious but when I think of the work on this work of these women I couldn’t help but reward them. The direction of Carol really makes the production design invisible as Haynes’ camera zooms in on our characters from every part of the body and almost forgets about the background but when the background becomes visible it just is striking how effectively Becker and Loeffler capture 1950’s america. From the winter colour scheme to the subtle ways these women reflected the characters in their designs it’s just so good. A main example of expert production design comes early in the film when the two leads first meet and just imagining how the designers made this old factory into one of the most beautiful toy stores imaginable it’s just too much to gush over which is why I easily give them the win.
