OUTSTANDING DOCUMENTARY

Amy (Directed by Asif Kapadia)

Best of Enemies (Directed by Robert Gordon & Morgan Neville)

Finders Keepers (Directed by Bryan Carberry & J. Clay Tweel)

The Look of Silence (Directed by Joshua Oppenheimer)

Western (Directed by Bill Ross IV & Turner Ross)

AND THE WINNER IS:

THE LOOK OF SILENCE (DIRECTED BY JOSHUA OPPENHEIMER)

This is the first win and second nomination for Joshua Oppenheimer for his direction of the documentary The Look of Silence. He was previously nominated for his documentary direction of The Act of Killing (2013).

The Act of Killing just came out two years ago which is hard to believe in context of how great that feature was but how equally if not greater this feature is from the same team. Oppenheimer has crafted a truly horrifying and emotionally wrenching documentary yet again following trully horrific people years after they committed such crimes. Where as Act of Killing had a playfulness to recreation the scenes of the past this film is an even more emotional journey as they interviewed are clearly affected by the previous documentary and possible quilt for their mistakes and Oppenheimer being able to capture this is such a feet. This is truly the years best documentary and a special one at that that I hope more seek out.
