OUTSTANDING FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

The Assassin (Directed by Hsiao-Hsien Hou)

Phoenix (Directed by Christian Petzold)

A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (Directed by Roy Andersson)

Victoria (Directed by Sebastian Schipper)

Wild Tales (Directed by Damián Szifrón)

AND THE WINNER IS:

PHOENIX (DIRECTED BY CHRISTIAN PETZOLD)

Before watching Phoenix I had no expectations towards the film because I knew nothing of the film but after watching it I was floored. Having noT much liked 2012’s Barbara, Phoenix was sort of a revelation. The strong callbacks to other world war II drama’s was so interesting to watch. Also the work by Nina Hoss is so good where when she’s not even speaking she pulls focus and really gives one of the great performances from this year. The final note I’ll make of the film is how in a year of brilliant ending scenes this is easily one of the best and without spoiling I will say that the choice was a risk but one that paid off as it showed the strength of the film.
