OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A MINISERIES OR MOVIE

Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre for (“Phyllis & Fred & Brenda & Marc”), Mrs. America
Janicza Bravo for (“Houston”), Mrs. America
Hettie Macdonald for (“Episode 8”), Normal People
Nicole Kassell for (“It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice”), Watchmen
Stephen Williams for (“This Extraordinary Being”), Watchmen

AND THE WINNER IS:

JANICZA BRAVO FOR ("HOUSTON"), MRS. AMERICA

This is the first win and nomination for Janicza Bravo.

There was a lot of great directors this year but when I think about one director who completely upended expectations visually for a limited series or television movie it was Bravo whose work on the episode "Houston" was some of the strongest direction I've seen in years. The episode broke from the expected story telling where episodes would focus on Phyllis and one of the ERA women and instead focused entirely on the natural character construction that was Alice. Bravo really has made a name for herself for me due to her work on this series. I still think about moments of brilliance months later like how differently characters we've come to know were captured when viewed through Alice's POV.
